On January 31st, 2024, we had the privilege of promoting Jodie Yuzhou Sun’s book “Brotherly Strangers: Kenya’s & Zambia’s Relations with China 1949-2019” at the University of Vienna. The event was organized by the Research Group New Cold War Studies at the University of Vienna and sponsored by the Research Center for the History of Transformations and our research project. After Jodie Yuzhou Sun’s presentation, our colleague Immanuel Harisch provided commentary on the book, which led to a lively discussion on the history of China’s presence in Africa and the current interpretations of this shared past. After the event’s official part, the participants continued informal discussions and shared research experiences over dinner. We congratulate Jodie on the book’s publication and thank her for the debate, which proved very insightful for our research on Yugoslav-Zambian exchanges.
