Goran Musić and Immanuel Harisch presented the early findings from the research project at this year’s European Conference on African Studies (ECAS) taking place in Cologne between the 31 May and 3 June 2023. The event gathered 2000 participants from 80 countries under the theme “African Futures” presenting a great opportunity for meeting other colleagues and learning about the latest research across various disciplines and fields, such as anthropology, economics, history, urban studies, political science, and history. Musić presented a paper on the imaginaries of race and development on the Yugoslav construction sites in Zambia in the 1970s as a part of the panel “Demystifying ‘postracial’ discourses on Africa: history, representations and trajectories” curated by Camille Martinerie and Tayler Friar. Immanuel Harisch’s paper “Paving the Way for Future Diplomatic Contacts? Exploring Connections between Zambian and Yugoslav Trade Unions in the Early 1960s” was presented on the panel “The African labour movement at a historical crossroads: past and future of unionism, work and society in Africa,” hosted by Stefano Bellucci and Anna Baldinetti.
Goran Musić used the trip to Germany to present the project additionally at the University of Potsdam. Upon a kind invitation from Dr Sabine Rutar, the Acting Professor of Global History at the University of Potsdam, Musić made a guest lecture and engaged in a lively discussion witht the students at a seminar titled “Beyond the Bipolarity of the Cold War. Global History of the Non-Aligned Movement” on 5 June 2023.
